- The year-ago quarter carried a $432M impairment of a Life Sciences trade name inside SG&A — that alone explains why SG&A fell 12% and operating profit rose 48%; adjusted EPS grew 8% ($1.94 vs $1.80).
- Growth bridge: sales +5.5% = core +3.0% + acquisitions +1.5% + currency +1.0%. Respiratory testing still subtracts 1.5 points; core ex-respiratory +4.5%.
- By segment (total growth): Biotechnology +4.0% (core +2.5%, bioprocessing revenue hit by customer project timing, but orders up mid-teens), Life Sciences +5.5%, Diagnostics +7.0% (of which 4 points acquisitions).
- Gross margin fell to 57.6% from 59.4%: cost of sales grew 10%, almost twice as fast as sales. Separately, acquisition-related items cost $0.15 per share this quarter and are excluded from adjusted EPS.
- Amortization of acquired intangibles: $463M pretax this quarter (vs $426M), ≈7% of sales — the main non-cash gap between GAAP and adjusted earnings.
- Interest expense rose to $107M (from $71M), but interest income jumped to $61M (from $8M); net non-operating cost fell to $49M from $105M.
