- GAAP net income attributable to NEE of $3,144M includes $640M of after-tax gains on non-qualifying hedges (a $189M loss a year ago), $134M from nuclear decommissioning fund securities and $31M of merger-related expenses; adjusted earnings were $2,407M.
- FPL, the regulated Florida utility, earned $1,412M (+10.7%) on revenue of $4,896M (+4.0%); regulatory capital employed grew about 9.3% y/y.
- NextEra Energy Resources revenue jumped 32.3% to $2,532M and its GAAP net income rose to $1,634M from $983M; on an adjusted basis it earned $1,291M (+18.3%).
- Interest expense fell to $487M from $1,060M largely because of fair-value gains on interest-rate derivatives — a mark-to-market swing, not cheaper debt.
- Pretax income of $2,538M turned into $2,622M of net income thanks to an $84M income tax benefit, and a further $522M of losses allocated to noncontrolling interests lifted income attributable to NEE to $3,144M.
- Merger-related expenses of $32M pretax appear in operating costs for the proposed Dominion Energy combination; Dominion customers would receive $2.25B of shareholder-funded bill credits if the deal closes.
